Heart operation performed with
robotic arm
The Engineer Apr. 29, 2010
*************************
The world’s first heart operation
to use a remote-controlled robotic
arm has been carried out at
Glenfield Hospital in Leicester,
U.K. The technique, designed to cure
irregular heart beats, involved
using a Remote Catheter Manipulation
System (RCMS) to steer catheters
into blood vessels at the top of the
groin and into the heart. The…

MEMS device generates power from
body heat
Physorg.com Apr. 29, 2010
*************************
A team of researchers from
Singapore has developed an
energy-harvesting device using
stacked thermocouples that generates
a few microwatts of electrical power
from body heat or any environment
where there is a temperature
gradient. (Jin Xie, et al.) By
accumulating this energy over time,
it could be used to prolong the
battery life of…

Sign language study shows multiple
brain regions wired for language
KurzweilAI.net May 30, 2010
*************************
A new study from the University of
Rochester finds that there is no
single advanced area of the human
brain that gives it language
capabilities above and beyond those
of any other animal species.
Instead, humans rely on several
regions of the brain, each designed
to accomplish different primitive
tasks, to make sense of a sentence.
For…

For the first time, researchers
have used a healthy person’s
complete genome sequence to predict
his risk for dozens of diseases and
how he will respond to several
common medications. The risk
analysis, from the Stanford
University School of Medicine, also
incorporates more-traditional
information such as a patient’s age

A proposed “Living Earth Simulator”
will mine economic, environmental
and health data to use “reality
modeling” to create a model of the
entire planet in real time by 2022,
with “situation rooms” in which
global leaders can view and manage
crises as they occur. The simulator
will model the behavior of entire
economies and then predict and…

Sculpting a Nano ‘World’
Technology Review Apr. 30, 2010
*************************
IBM researchers have invented a
low-cost, fast, and relatively
simple fabrication tool capable of
reliably creating 3-D features as
small as 15 nanometers. The silicon
tip is cantilevered like those used
in atomic force microscopy (AFM),
enabling it to apply nanonewtons of
force to the surface. But unlike
AFM, the tip is heated, so when it…
